故事背影
瑪拿西王統治猶大國的五十五年間，百姓不再敬拜耶和華，卻轉而去拜偶像，受周圍敘利亞和迦南文化的影響。瑪拿西王立巴力和亞舍拉的神像，又在所羅門為約櫃所蓋的聖殿裡，將祭壇獻給太陽、月亮和星星諸神，甚至將自己的兒子獻上當作燒化祭。瑪拿西之後，他的另一個兒子亞捫繼位，與父親一樣行惡。兩年後，宮裡的臣僕將他殺了。
到了主前640年，亞捫的兒子約西亞登基作猶大王，當時年僅八歲。因著他所帶來的改革，後人紀念他是個好王，「盡心、盡性、盡力地歸向耶和華……」（二十三：25）
約西亞王決定修理聖殿，恢復耶和華的敬拜。一天，在工程進行中，祭司宣布他發現一個奧妙的卷軸。聖經並未提及這卷軸如何形成，只告訴我們有人在王面前讀那書，王聽見所讀的話，就在哀傷中撕裂衣服。我們不知道書上寫什麼，但學者認為應該包含申命記十二章到二十六章的內容。
王從宮中派出五人去找人解釋書上所寫的（看戶勒大在二十二章15-17節的回答），找著之後，就迫不及待地要趕回王宮，把這可怕的壞消息講給王聽，但戶勒大還有更特別的信息要給王（二十二：18-20）。
約西亞王瞭解戶勒大對聖經的解釋是正確的，且是從上帝來的，戶勒大連說四次「耶和華如此說」，王就相信她。約西亞王在百姓面前誦讀所得到的約書，並承諾要忠實守約。他廢除所有的異教崇拜，把耶和華的敬拜集中在耶路撒冷的聖殿，並重新設立逾越節。
二十年後，耶路撒冷會落入巴比倫人的手中，但約西亞不至親眼看見這事發生。後人紀念戶勒大，因為她對聖經有充足的知識，並且有勇氣為王解釋聖經的意義。
